  • A retail manager is responsible for the day to day running of a shop, supermarket or store. Management skills you will need include motivating staff, organising stock levels and deliveries, sales and other financial targets and procurement duties. You will also become involved with maintaining health and Safety regulations and dealing with store security.

    A good retail manager will also have the ability to defuse angry customers and deal with their complaints calmly and effectively. A knowledge of market trends will help forecast future sales and a deep understanding of customer needs is essential.

    Food retail at most job levels, involves controlling stock and organising buying, ordering and stock control. With manager or assistant retail manager roles, you will be expected to receive deliveries and check their content and condition. Hygiene is a big area and training is required. Nearly all employees will be involved in preparing food product displays, serving customers and advising customers.

    Most retail vacancies and careers involve the following duties:
    Applying commercial knowledge to develop new business and increase sales
    Understand and work within the set budgets.
    Employing and interviewing new staff when required. Training and helping nurture the staff.
    Monitoring Customer service levels and customer satisfaction.

    Store merchandising and procurement within the set budgets
    Develope and initiate store and product promotions
    Managing deliveries from suppliers, inspecting deliveries and monitoring quality
    Supervising health and safety issues and making sure standards are upheld.
